AI Choreographic Mimicking
Artificial intelligence models can produce lifelike video footage with a simple text prompt. But these tools still struggle with generating realistic videos of complex natural movements, like human dance. A research team at CalMatters, a nonpartisan and nonprofit news organization, tested consumer-facing, closed-source generative video tools because they are the most readily available for everyday users and tend to perform better than open-source models. The systems tested were Sora 2 by OpenAI, Veo 3.1 by Google, Kling 2.5 by Kuaishou, and Hailou 2.3 by MiniMax.
The study concluded that while AI can create impressive visual content, it struggles to understand and replicate complex, culturally specific human motion. Read more details and see videos in the article: How we tested and evaluated AI-generated dance videos, by Mohamed Al Elew, Khari Johnson and Levi Sumagaysay, published on January 21, 2026, in CalMatters: https://calmatters.org/show-your-work/2026/01/how-we-tested-ai-generated-dance-videos/
BOOKS ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:
Teaching and Learning Dance Through Meaningful Gestures, by Anabella Lenzu, (2024) explores how technique is a philosophy and a theory, and how the body is an instrument for expression. The author aims to foster dialogue and community between the different cultures that she has been a part of, to share the knowledge and experience gained over the past 35 years, and to advocate for thoughtful dance training. The book serves dancers and teachers as they train and explore the professional world of dance and embark on their own journeys. Lenzu has written for various dance and arts magazines and in 2013 published her first book, Unveiling Motion and Emotion, which contains writings in Spanish and English on the importance of dance, community, choreography, and dance pedagogy. FILMS ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:
10Dance, feature film, Netflix & Ringside Studios, Japan 2025 © Directed by Keishi Otomo, choreography by Accursio Romeo, staring Ryoma Takeuchi and Keita Machida. Two expert dancers, Shinya Sugiki and Shinya Suzuki, aim to master each other’s styles for a prestigious ballroom dance competition, but old rivalries and potential romance complicate their partnership. Inouesatoh’s hit manga “10 DANCE” depicts the passion, anguish, jealousy and love shared between two men wholly devoted to dance.
The story follows Shinya Suzuki (Ryoma Takeuchi), Japan’s Latin dance champion, and Shinya Sugiki (Keita Machida), often called “Emperor,” Japan’s ballroom dance champion and ranked second in the world. One day, Sugiki appears before Suzuki and proposes that the two of them become champions of the 10 Dance: an extremely demanding competition that requires both physical and mental fortitude, as participants must master 10 styles of dance—five Latin and five ballroom—and perform them all in a single day.
Suzuki and Sugiki commence training at Sugiki Dance School accompanied by their respective dance partners. The two men clash as a result of their conflicting lifestyles and personalities, yet as they begin to understand each other’s style of dance, they find themselves drawn closer to one another.
