Choreography + Robotics = Choreobotics?

Dance artists play a significant role in the development of robotic technologies. As moving machines like drones and self-driving cars become more integrated into our daily lives, the tech companies behind them are realizing they need experts who intimately understand motion through space and time, and how the nuances of that motion can affect the way we feel about their products. Translation: They need dance artists! Link to the entire article in USAs Dance Magazine here.

BOOKS ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:

Contemporary Dance Choreography and Spectatorship -- Embodied Emotion, by Lucía Piquero Álvarez, Palgrave Macmillan © 2023. This book: 1) Establishes an interdisciplinary dialogue between dance analysis and philosophy; 2) Offers a unique view which links the experiences of choreographers and audience members; 3) Argues for dance itself being a medium of emotional communication.

This book argues for dance itself—its materials, its structures—as a medium of emotional communication. Contemporary dance often seems to contend with issues of understanding, regularly being read” in languages” which alienate it. Even if emotion seems a significant part of peoples engagement with dance, its workings are often surrounded by an air of mysticism. Engaging with these issues, this study investigates the experience of emotion in Euro-American contemporary dance theatre.

The book questions its dependence on the artists personal emotions, and the assumption that it is mediated by representational meaning. Instead, this book proposes that the emotional import of dance emerges from an interplay between perceptual properties and symbolic elements in an embodied affective cognitive experience. This experience includes the background of the spectator as well as the context of work, choreographer, performer(s) and other creative agents. LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Contemporary-Dance-Choreography-Spectatorship-Embodied/dp/3031449614

CINEMA ON CHOREOGRAPHY & CHOREOGRAPHERS:

Tiler Peck: Suspending Time -- Documentary, 2025. The film offers a raw and deeply personal look at one of ballets most celebrated artists as she faces a career crossroads. Following a series of life-altering events — a major injury, a pandemic, a personal loss — New York City Ballet prima ballerina Tiler Peck is forced to reckon with the unknown and reimagine her relationship to dance, to her body, and to herself.

Directed by Alex Ramsey, the film follows Tiler over the course of six years of her life, through rehearsal studios, stages, and quiet moments of reflection, as she fights to return stronger, not just as a prima ballerina, but also as a choreographer and creative force. Featuring original work by Peck alongside choreography from Alonzo King, William Forsythe, George Balanchine, and Christopher Wheeldon, the film blends vulnerability and resilience with artistic brilliance. Premiered on October 24, 2025 at Lucasfilm Premier Theater in San Francisco. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsKmx1v3Lp8
